The movie is directed by Neeraj Ghaywan in his directorial debut, which is written by Varun Grover, and produced in an Indo-French co-production produced by the Drishyam films, Macassar production, Phantom films, Sikhya Entertainment, Arte France cinema, and Pathe production.
The film stars Richa Chaddha and Vicky Kaushal in the lead roles and in pivotal roles you can see Pankaj Tripathi, Shweta Tripathi, and Sanjay Mishra. This movie is also the debut of Vicky Kaushal in the Bollywood industry.
The film deals with the issues of a casteist society and shows the tragic love story between a lower caste boy and an upper caste girl.
Masaan Cast
The cast of the film Masaan is a bunch of so many talented actors and actresses. The cast was so fine that you really forget that they all are actors and they are doing their jobs.
Richa Chadha as Devi Pathak, who is really under the skin of the character and struggles to shake off the social stigma of pre-marital sexual affair relationships. Vicky Kaushal as Deepak Kumar, as a lead actor. This was the debut film of Vicky Kaushal and already in his first movie, he introduced himself very well with his extraordinary performance and now he doesn’t need any introduction.
Shweta Tripathi as Shalu Gupta, who is playing the role of the love interest of Deepak Kumar in the movie, who belongs to the upper caste. Sanjay Mishra as Vidyadhar Pathak, playing the role of Devi Pathak’s father. Sanjay Mishra never disappoints you whether it’s comedy or any serious drama. He can steal the show with his performance.
Pankaj Tripathi as Sadhya plays an extended cameo role in the movie, but it’s enough to catch the audience’s eyes to him. The cast of the film is on point and apart from the main cast, the supporting cast also does a great job like Bhagwan Tiwari as inspector Mishra, Nikhil Sahni as Jhonta, Vineet Kumar as Dom Raja, Shreedhar Dubey as KK, Satyakam Anand as Vikram Mallah, Niharica Raizada in a special appearance.
Masaan Story
The film revolves around the lives of two characters Devi and Deepak, two young people in Varanasi, India. Devi Pathak is a trainer at a computer coaching center, and her student Piyush Aggarwal has an affair and are caught having sex in a hotel room by a local policeman who had been tipped by the hotel staff, and when police caught them having sex then Piyush Agarwal was afraid and locked himself in the bathroom and commits suicide by slitting his wrist.
Inspector Mishra threatens Devi and Devi’s father to book Devi for abetting Piyush’s suicide and demands a heavy bribe. On the other hand, a boy named Deepak Kumar (Vicky Kaushal) is a student of civil engineering at a polytechnic college, who is also the youngest of the Dom (lower caste) family working in the cremation ghats. Deepak falls in love with Shalu Gupta (Shweta Tiwari) a high-caste Hindu girl.
They start meeting each other, on a pilgrimage trips with her family, Shalu dies in an accident and her body with those of other victims ends up at the same ghat where Deepak and Deepak’s family works. The movie shows two stories and two sides of the society, one where Devi continuously fights for her dignity and her respect, and on the other hand, Deepak and Shalu attempt to transcend the restrictions of their casteist society.
Two Different Lives, Two Different Stories. One follows the musings of a young couple from different castes, and the other involves a father and daughter who are tormented by the orthodox architecture of a small town.
