Mehrangarh Fort, the main attraction and one of the majestic and massive wonder of blue city of India, “Jodhpur”. Mehangarh Fort. Stand tall on a hilltop, rising about around 122 metres from the surrounding of the plain area.
The Mehrangarh Fort is so huge that it covers around 1200 acres (486 hectares) of land.
The structure of the fort is maintained and wisely protected by the Gaj Singh, he is also called maharaja of Jodhpur and currently the head of house of Rathore. Gaj Singh controls all the activities which is directly or indirectly related to the Mehrangarh Fort. The fort was built in 1459 by the Rao Jodha, who was ruler of Rathore clan.

Mehrangarh Fort History & Story Behind The Curse
The Mehrangarh Fort has its own history and stories, let’s unfold some mysteries and history about it. The Mehrangarh’s name was derived or rooted from a Sanskrit word “Mihir”, which means Sun and Garh means fort and by word of mouthing the Mihirgarh evolves to Mehrangarh in Rajasthani language.
The fort was built by Rao Jodha and he also founded the Jodhpur in 1459 as the capital of Marwar. Rao Jodha was the fifteenth ruler of the Rathore clan and moved his capital to Jodhpur from Mandore, because the Mandore fort was no longer considered safe from the security aspect and no longer able to provide sufficient resources and security.
According to the stories, the hill where the Mehrangarh Fort was built was known as Bhakurcheeria, the mountains of bird, and a man name Cheeria Nathji considered to be lord of birds used to live and meditate there at the hill and when requested by the king to move he refused categorically and then Rao Jodha took extreme measures and sought help from another great and more powerful saint for removing Cheeria Nathji from that mountain apparently he left but cursed the king with the words “Rao Jodha! May your citadel ever suffer a scarcity of water”.
Information About Mehrangarh Fort
This Mehrangarh Fort is way more famous and visited by the peoples then any other forts in Rajasthan. The fort has many musicians who is always performing folk music of Rajasthan. The musicians were everywhere in the fort like, In entrance in mid and that garden area and also in the temple area. Inside the Mehrangarh Fort there are also many restaurants, some houses, a museum and also a craft bazaar, where people used to buy something for themselves but yes the things were costing you some decent amount of money.
There are total 7 gates in the Mehrangarh Fort and each gate has their own history and story to tell. The most famous of the gates are :-
- Jai Pol :- This gate is built to celebrate the victory of Maharaja Man Singh in 1806. Maharaja Man Singh’s victories are in a war with Bikaner and Udaipur armies.
- Fateh Pol :- Fateh is an Urdu word and it means victory and this Fateh pol was also built to celebrate the victory of Rajput and their Maharaja Ajit Singh over the Mughals in 1707.
- Gopal Pol :- Gopal pol is the second gate after the Fateh pol.
- Dedh Kangra Pol :- Dedh Kangra pol still have the scars of bombardment by cannonballs.
- Amruti Pol :- This Amruti is in between the dedh Kangra pol and Doha pol.
- Loha Pol :- This Loha pol is the final gate of the fort and located in the main part of the fort.
- Suraj Pol :- This Suraj pol is located in the inner most part of the fort which provided access to the palace complex and Daulat khana chauk.
Inside the fort there are several brilliantly crafted and beautifully decorated palaces, which includes Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Sheesha Mahal (Mirror Palace), Daulat Khana and Sileh Khana. The top of the mehrangarh fort is preserved for the old cannons, including the famous cannon “KILKILA” and the top of the fort also
provides a breath-taking view of the blue city jodhpur.
Timing And Ticket Price of Mehrangarh Fort
The fort open everyday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and the price of one domestic/ Indian ticket is rupees 200/- each Indian person, and for the foreigners the price of one ticket is rupees 600/- each and for students and senior citizens the cost of one ticket is rupees 100/- each.
If you really want to explore whole fort perfectly then you have to come early for this, because the fort is really huge and covers a vast area including a garden and a temple in it.

The clock tower of jodhpur city was built by Maharaja Sardar Singh from whom the adjacent Sardar Market takes its name. The clock tower is situated in Nai Sarak, Ghantaghar Market Jodhpur Rajasthan. The clock tower of jodhpur is just a tall ancient tower in between the city.
I personally don’t recommends you this place because its just a simple ancient tower but the tower gives an amazing outer view of the mehrangarh fort and the city. There are no tickets required for roaming around the clock tower.
• Jaswant Thada, Jodhpur

The Jaswant Thada is built by Maharaja Sardar Singh of jodhpur in 1899. The Jaswant Thada is erected in a honour and memory of his father (Maharaja Jaswant Singh) and this palace also serves as the cremation ground for the royal blood or the rajput family of Marwar.
The Jaswant Thada is built out of intricately carved sheets of markrana marble and literally defines the meaning of beauty. The Jaswant Thada’s ground feature carved gazebos and also has a maintained and beautifully managed garden and a small lake and beautiful scenic view.
The ticket price for international guest are Rs. 50/- each and for the domestic guests the charges are Rs. 30/- each and Jaswant thada opens everyday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
• Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur

Umaid Bhawan Palace is also located on Chittar hills in Jodhpur city, and it is one of the world’s largest private residences. The Umaid Bhawan Palace is divided into three sections, the large portion of the palace is run by the Taj and the second portion is the residence of the royal family and the third one is a museum focusing on the 20th century history of the royal family of Jodhpur.
The Umaid Bhawan has also a nice collection of vintage cars. The ticket price for visiting museum for international guests is Rs 200/- each and for the domestic guests the charge is Rs. 60/- each and the museum opens everyday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

We all decided to travel comfortably, so we booked our train ticket for the train Jodhpur Superfast Express, which departs at 11:10 pm from Sarai Rohilla Railway Station and the Jodhpur arrival time for this train is 9:35 am. The total time taken by the train was 10 hours 30 minutes. The total distance covered by train was 622 km.
